Types of Honda Keys We Replace and Program
Honda has evolved its key technology significantly over the decades, and knowing which system your vehicle uses is the first step to a proper replacement. Older Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Odyssey models from the early-to-mid 1990s used basic mechanical keys with no electronics — these can be cut quickly from a code or by hand. Starting roughly in the late 1990s, Honda began integrating transponder chips into the key blade; the chip must be programmed to match your vehicle's ECU or the engine will crank but not start. Many models from the 2000s and 2010s use a remote head key — a flip-style or fixed key blade combined with lock/unlock buttons — which requires both blade cutting and remote programming.
Newer Honda models, including recent CR-Vs, Pilots, Accords, and Odysseys equipped with Honda Sensing, often use a proximity smart key (sometimes called a key fob or keyless access fob) that allows push-button start without inserting a key. These units require dealer-level programming equipment, which our technicians carry in the service vehicle. We also handle key fob battery replacement, fob shell replacement when the casing is cracked, and situations where one key works but a second key needs to be added to the system — all performed on-site, wherever you're located on Long Island or in the Five Towns and Rockaway areas.
